NAME: John Langworth
TRADE: Soldier 1st West India Regiment
AGED: 27
A NATIVE OF: Gloucestershire
TRANSPORTED FOR: 7 years
CONVICTED FOR: Stealing two saddles
IN: 1827
SENT TO PORT ARTHUR FOR: Being a violent and uncontrollable man.
John Langworth was caught offering a waistcoat
and a pair of trousers for sale and refusing to explain where he had
got them from. The Commandant decided to make an example. He ordered
Langworth to leave Port Arthur and go to Hobart. This may seem like
a strange punishment, but it was very costly for Langworth. It meant
that he lost his pay, his house, his vegetable plot, and his allowance
of tea, tobacco and rum.
