NAME: John Langworth
TRADE: Soldier 1st West India Regiment
AGED: 27
A NATIVE OF: Gloucestershire
TRANSPORTED FOR: 7 years
CONVICTED FOR: Stealing two saddles
IN: 1827
SENT TO PORT ARTHUR FOR: Being a violent and uncontrollable man.

John Langworth was caught offering a waistcoat and a pair of trousers for sale and refusing to explain where he had got them from. The Commandant decided to make an example. He ordered Langworth to leave Port Arthur and go to Hobart. This may seem like a strange punishment, but it was very costly for Langworth. It meant that he lost his pay, his house, his vegetable plot, and his allowance of tea, tobacco and rum.

When visitors arrive at the Port Arthur Visitors' Centre they are assigned a card from Tom Samek's brilliantly designed deck of cards: ie. fate deals them a blow! Each visitor then "becomes" that convict for the duration of their stay. See an image from the Port Arthur Visitors' Centre. The complete deck of cards can be purchased at the Centre.
