The Port Arthur Visitors' Centre

Hamish Maxwell-Stewart (University of Tasmania) and Robert Morris-Nunn (Robert Morris-Nunn Associates) are pictured standing behind replicas of themselves playing the parts of Port Arthur constables. Dorothy Evans, the Port Arthur Interpretation Officer, decided that it would be most appropriate if the two constables were played by the Historian and Architect who helped her to design the exhibition. The constables are depicted enjoying the fruits of black market trading. At the same time they are playing with the cards issued to visitors as tickets; a reference to the power of penal station constables who have the fate of the convict/visitor in their hands. The complete deck of cards can be purchased at the Port Arthur Visitors' Centre. Photograph taken by Julie Payne and reproduced here with her permission.
